Upper Bain

Walks, maps and small notes from the upper valley.

Early frost on the chalk path

The first cold morning of the season. The path above the mill was white until nine, and the river ran higher than it has all summer.

Old field boundaries on the 1887 map

Comparing the survey sheets with what is left on the ground: two hedgerows gone, one new track, and a footbridge that nobody seems to remember.

A short loop for rainy days

Four miles, mostly on hard tracks, with a bench halfway and a good view back down the valley when the cloud lifts.
